Write Every Day: Day 3
Apr. 3rd, 2019 04:13 pm![[personal profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/user.png)
Was a bit of a struggle to reach 1k today but I got there eventually. I finished a paragraph on 995 and those last five words were far more difficult than the others!

Date: 2019-04-03 10:22 pm (UTC)(I gotta get Minuit screaming "Where the fuck have you been?" the moment she sees him, and subsequently hugging him within an inch of his life and asking what he did with his hair, in text somehow, though.)
And I don't know if I can drop into the PoV of the police officer looking at Adrien's phone without rethinking my structure, because of necessity that's a scene Adrien isn't in. I also don't know if I can revisit any of the existing seven PoV characters (or other OCs), or if I can't. Gaaaah.

Date: 2019-04-03 11:15 pm (UTC)I wrote a 244-word exercise during the writers' club I run for a small group of students at school. It's always fun to hear what they come up with, and I usually have a lot of fun myself as well. Today, we picked random words from the bible and then had to use them in a story. I managed to work Moab, unblemished, events, drew, and obscure into a little satirical bit about Satanism, bestiality, and proper English ritual sacrifices. ;-)

Date: 2019-04-04 08:01 pm (UTC)I keep meaning to do short stories myself but I'm struggling to predict how many words things actually need? Just need practice, probably. Don't want to start a short story collection and then find I've got five fledgling novellas on my hands, y'know?

Date: 2019-04-08 09:46 am (UTC)I totally know what you mean! I tend towards wordiness, and usually when I start something that I believe is a short story, it ends up wanting to be more of a novella or a long novelette, and then I run out of steam because I didn't plan as much as something of that length needs from me. I've had more practice with short fiction when I've done fanfic exchanges etc. because I rarely have time for anything long in the time-frame of the exchange, and I have an incentive to finish! And I've also been reading more original short stories, especially after I discovered all those modern SFF zines (including their podcasts, which allow me to "read" a story while on a train or cleaning or knitting or something). So I'm hoping I'll start to learn to think also in short-story length, because some stories will work better explored in a shorter length, and I don't have time to write a novel out of all the ideas I get! I still don't know how to predict length (though I do okay-ish with fanfic, but there I already know many of the variables, like characters and the world), but maybe it'll get easier if I manage to write a few of them!
