Day 15

In your own space, write a love letter to Fandom in general, to a particular fandom, to a trope, a relationship, a character, or to your flist/circle/followers. Share your love and squee as loud as you want to.

Oh! I don't know what to say that hasn't already been said! I wish I could be terribly eloquent here. Um.

Thank you to everyone who has commented and interacted with me over the past two weeks. It's always fantastic to get that notification email, isn't it? ♥ To my friends, old and new, I'm so excited to keep getting to know you, and reading your posts, and celebrating your achievements. If we can hold onto the positivity and engagement we've cultivated during Snowflake, we're well on our way to making 2018 a great year for fandom.

Day 13

In your own space, set some goals for the coming year. They can be fannish or not, public or private.

- Read 18 books this year; read fanfic more widely and often (I have specific plans for these, but I won't bore you with the details)
- Complete my [community profile] getyourwordsout writing pledge (200K)
- Finish as many WIPs as possible, particularly ones posted incomplete on AO3

Day 14

In your own space, create your own challenge. Whatever your challenge is, have fun with it!

My challenge to fellow snowflakes is to go read and comment on a piece of femslash (or gen female friendship) fic on AO3, regardless of how often you already do that <3

Day 10

In your own space, share your love for a trope, cliché, kink, motif, or theme. (Or a few!) Tell us what makes it work for you, and why it appeals to you so much. Talk about what you like to see in fanworks featuring that theme most.

Hurt/Comfort - and I really do like both, although whump no comfort is more common and that's fine, I'll take that. My favourite stories, though, take as much time and detail describing the recovery process as the torture/accident/injury phase. And that's difficult, I know that, as a writer, because it feels like it becomes necessary to know a little bit of medical stuff in order to fix the hurt character...but honestly, I don't mind how accurate it is. I'm not going to know in reality all the complications that might follow from a gunshot wound - but I'd like there to be complications, and all the angst that the characters go through trying to deal with that...it's my jam, okay. Ideally, I don't want the story to just end when they are rescued. (Although the rescuing part itself is always excellent. XD)

Alternate Universe - Canon Divergence. SO MANY of my stories are this. Change one thing about canon and what cascade of consequences does that produce? It probably fixes things and breaks others, and navigating the choices made by canon writers and exploring the unseen paths is what fanfic is all about, for me.

Day 11

Share a book/song/movie/tv show/fanwork/etc that changed your life.

LIFE ON MARS (UK). I've met my best friends through this tv show. And it has plenty of whump in canon - Sam Tyler is in an RTA in Episode One and spends the rest of the show in a coma in 2006 while still doing his job in 1973...and sometimes he feels medical effects filtering through to his body. It's so damn good, okay. And the music is heaven. It introduced me to so much music that I probably would never have heard otherwise.

Day 12

In your own space, create a fanwork. Make a podfic, an icon, a sketch, a meta, or a rec list. Arts and crafts. Cross stitch. Draft an essay about a particular medium. Put together a picspam or a fanmix. Write a review of a book you love, a ship manifesto, a you-should-be-listening-to-this-band essay. Create something.

I've been wanting to try making a fic cover for ages, so here's my first attempt, for one of my favourite Harold/Grace, Harold/John first kiss stories:

Day 9

In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you have created. It can be your favorite fanworks that you've created, or fanworks you feel no one ever saw, or fanworks you say would define you as a creator.

Alright, here are three PoI fics that I've written!

My favourite: You Just Know When You Know
This has more to do with the title of the fic than the story itself. It's a line from this song. I listened to Something Like Happiness on repeat for several months before I wrote the fic. It was a great comfort to me during a difficult summer, to listen to this and think of my OTP. It really really reminds me of Rinch. Starring lines include: You got somewhere to go when you go, which makes me think of the theme of home in the show, and how they basically keep saying that Harold is home for John. And If you love them, Go and tell them, Tell them over and over and over again, Heaven forbid opportunities missed might as well be a motto for their relationship, given past experiences with Grace and Jess. And the music video features a man in a suit with a briefcase following a bird flying through abandoned buildings and parks? So??? (Oh, yeah, and the fic itself is pretty cute. Kissing in the snow is a great romantic trope.)

No one ever saw: A Perfect Heart's Length Away
Well, people did see it. It got a good number of hits and kudos. But I'd like more comments on it. I'm proud of the way I drew parallels between Reese/Finch and Harold/Nathan, while wrapping up some loose threads from canon. It is kind of abstract and flows randomly through time, which I guess might confuse people, but I like it. It's like how everyone makes parallel gifsets on tumblr, but in written form.

Defines my creative choices: For Everyone to See
Fluff, check, Established Relationship, check, Domesticity, check. You see a lot of that in my pile of PoI works.

Day 8

In your own space, share a favorite piece of original canon (a TV episode, a song, a favorite interview, a book, a scene from a movie, etc) and explain why you love it so much.

Here are some moments from Person of Interest that bring me joy.

Day 7

In your own space, create a love meme for yourself. Let people tell you how amazing and awesome and loveable you really are.

!!! I don't remember this one from last year?!!?! Alright, then, suckers:

(gif source)

Tell me I'm going to be able to make some money off my original writing sometime soon if I just keep at it. Tell me your impressions of me so far, or what your favourite fannish thing that I've done has been.

Day 6

Leave feedback for a fanwork.

Fandom: Fingersmith
Title: if we must be symbolic
Wordcount: 1047
Pairing: Maud/Sue

Hah, I really needed this challenge to give me a poke to just do the thing instead of being shy. But I'm still lskjdlaskjd. So nervous. I don't know why. I love leaving detailed comments on AO3 generally. There's just something extra intimidating about a) the tiny size of this fandom and b) the author's evidently high skill.

Day 5

Recommend a fannish or creative resource.

Person of Interest related again - I love this Timeline Wiki for working out which flashbacks happened in what year and which episode I need to rewatch for particular pieces of character backstory.

Day 4

In your own space, create a fannish wishlist. No limits on size or type of fanwork; just tell us what you’d like to see.

- Fanart of my Person of Interest fic. Particularly Come Away With Me (the lakeside confession scene in Chapter 2) or Color is Awesome (Root paints John's nails). If anything at all inspires you, I would be thrilled!

- More people to watch Lip Service and write fix-its / create any kind of fanwork for it. It has Scottish/British/Australian lesbians/wlw. And it's only 12 episodes long. I ship Tess/Lexy, Sam/Cat and Frankie/Sadie, but seriously, anything would be good!

- More fic for my Lost OTP: Ben Linus/John Locke

- Fellow podfic creators / listeners - help me out? How do you organise your podfics? How do you title your original takes vs edited tracks? How do you decide what order you listen to podfics? (This is assuming somebody else is like me and over time has downloaded a bunch (300+) of files with no organisation whatsoever, instead of saving them one at a time.) I've only just got around to creating a 'To Listen' folder and a 'Done' folder and putting the fandom in the filenames. I'm trying to get into a regular habit of listening instead of just whenever I can't sleep, and some form of organisation seems like the first step.

Day 3

In your own space, post recs for at least three fanworks that you did not create.

About Today by Nadiow613 [VID, Person of Interest, Reese&/Finch, spoilers all the way to 5x13, major character death]
I simply HAVE to rec this vid. The National is one of my favourite bands. The lyrics suit this pairing/friendship perfectly and the vidder has nailed every line. They include all of my favourite moments along with some visual parallels I'd not noticed before. And if you're not tearing up by the end, you're a stronger person than me.

one way or another by Nialies [VID, Person of Interest, Root/Shaw, spoilers for major character deaths]
This is such a haunting video. It gets me right in the gut every time. Root's determination to find Shaw in Season 4 is perfectly summed up, as is her place in the universe regarding the Machine. And then from 02:30 for about 20 seconds, it evolves into this long section of amazing audio work and snappy timing (and Shaw being a total badass). The beat rocks back and forth and it's just indescribably good.

nobody else will by TheHiddenMemory [VID, Person of Interest, John Reese, Joss Carter, the Numbers]
TheHiddenMemory has done a LOT of great vidding work, it's difficult to pick just one of theirs, but this...not only is it a great Reese character study, but it showcases some of my favourite numbers and explains the 'comic book hero' aspect of the show in a really moving, down-to-earth way.

Call Me Maybe by Talitha78 [VID, Person of Interest, Reese/Finch, Season 1 & 2 only]
Everyone clicks on this expecting it to be total crack - but it's a cover of the song you're not expecting, and it works SO WELL. The telephone motif is really well developed and I adore the medley of Reese fight scenes in the instrumental section. And it's exactly the kind of wink-wink-cheeky-smile slash vid that I need to mend my heart after watching a lot of angsty ones.

Day 2

In your own space, share a favorite memory about fandom: the first time you got into fandom, the last time a fanwork touched your heart, crazy times with fellow fans (whether on-line or off-line), a lovely comment you’ve received or have left for someone.

Oh gosh, so many memories! The one that springs to mind re. crazy times with fellow fans offline is the Life on Mars Manchester meetup. Six of us (from multiple countries) arranged to rent a flat for a week. We walked a ridiculous amount, searching for filming locations, and visited the police museum, and went second-hand cosplay shopping, and it was just. Awesome. I'm so, so lucky to have been a part of that. So many in-jokes! Such a sense of belonging and friendship and SO much laughter. I'm still in touch with some, have lost track of others. I dearly hope that wherever you folks are, you remember that week as fondly as I have.

Last month, I sent fannish greeting cards to my friends and they responded by taking a photo of their card and describing how happy they were to open it, and that is the bestttttt feeling.

Since 2015, I've been keeping a gratitude list in a spreadsheet and I record all my favourite comments there. If you're a writer, I really recommend doing this. When you feel less than confident about your writing, you can read through that list again. It helps. It really helps.

Day 1

In your own space, talk about why you're participating in Snowflake and, if you’ve participated in the past, how the challenge has affected you. What drew you to it? What did you take away from it? What do you hope to accomplish this year?

I'm participating in 2018 because fandom is very important to me. I've made some amazing friends, who are ridiculously talented and generous with their time and effort and craft. I'm also in a place now where I feel more secure on Dreamwidth as a platform, I visit it every day, I'm getting better at commenting on other people's posts. New connections are growing through holiday_wishes and yuletide.

I participated in 2015 and 2016. When I look back through my snowflake tag, I can see that I've been quite hard on myself in some posts, but proud in others. I'm still using Habitica for habit tracking, and with it I have a whole two years more experience at creating new habits and - most importantly - forgiving myself when I fall behind. Adjusting my goals to make them more realistic and quantifiable instead of giving up in a huff!

What it boils down to is...Be kind to yourself. Whether that's by inviting people to praise your work through self-recs, or by exploring your fannish identity so that you can look back on it in future years and go...huh, those were my priorities. I've changed, or I haven't changed. Or, I overcame my shyness, if only for a day.

That's why I need this challenge. :) Thank you for running it.

Day 03

In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you have created. It can be your favorite fanworks that you've created, or fanworks you feel no one ever saw, or fanworks you say would define you as a creator. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Looking At The Ground
Person of Interest | Reese/Finch | gifset
Many of my favourite things I've done this past year have been gifsets. This one took about 8 hours to complete, and I was pretty much smitten with it from start to finish. Their faaaaces. It kills me. All the pining.

Soulmates
Life on Mars | Sam/Gene | gifset
This poem appeared on tumblr and I just had to apply it to synchronized policing husbands. I'm still amazed by how many notes it got! My OTP lives on. I oversaturated the colours a little bit, but it doesn't detract from the overall message.

There's A Colour In Your Hands
Person of Interest | Harold/Grace/John | G-rated fic | 1336 words
Why do I love OT3s so much? I remember being giddy for at least a day after writing this one. Completely domestic fluff, with a tiny bit of angst sprinkled on top, because Reese is a giant sad puppy.

Day 2
In your own space, create a list of at least three fannish things you'd love to receive, something you've wanted but were afraid to ask for - a fannish wish-list of sorts.

- Give me icon requests? I did these for Life on Mars ladies recently, and it reminded me how much I thoroughly enjoy the process. I don't mind which fandom, or no fandom, I'd just like the satisfaction of seeing someone use a thing I made while they are blogging. (Is that weird? There would of course be no obligation if you didn't like them that much, um.)

- Person of Interest Root/Shaw fic recs or meta, specifically those that deal with the stuff that went down in the second half of Season 4. I started a fic called For Sacrifice (spoilers) to try and fill in the gaps between episodes from Root's perspective, and then realised I just don't have a clue what to write. What is Root doing when she's offscreen? I'd love to read other fan theories on that, and hopefully get some inspiration for my own WIP too. (Doesn't have to be Season 5 compliant, although I don't mind spoilers on that front.)

- Short (< 30 mins) podfic recs. I was really into listening to podfic a couple of years ago and then I somehow lost my way. I'd like to get back into that if I can.

Day 01

In your own space, talk about why you are doing the Fandom Snowflake Challenge? What drew you to it as a participant? What do you hope to accomplish by doing these challenges?

I dipped my toes in the water last year, having watched some of my friends play for a couple of years prior to that. I only kept it up for the first week or so, but it was a very positive experience all round, getting to read what other people feel about fandom as well as receiving help and motivation for creative projects. This year I hope to respond to more if not all of the challenges, with the aid of Habitica, which has been changing my life for the better in tiny ways for several months now. I just made a checklist To-Do for the Snowflake Challenge. Also, I miss LiveJournal. Moodthemes! 100x100px icons! You don't get those on tumblr. Let us see each other more, LJ.

Day 6

In your own space, create a fanwork. A drabble, a ficlet, a podfic, or an icon, art or meta or a rec list. A picspam. Something.

So it HAD to be a drabble.

The Love In His Eyes

He can cover his mouth with a hand to hide a smile. The distance of a phone link can disguise butterflies, an offhand quip to reassure himself that his voice remains level, that he's holding onto decorum. He's not afraid of sentiment, not anymore, but he gets the sense Finch finds it unseemly. John lifts the lid only when Harold needs it, a reminder that Reese needs him, that he is his 'someone new'.

When their gazes meet, it all surfaces. There's no burying everything he feels. Harold's eyes drink it in and reflect his love back to him, multiplied.

Day 5

In your own space, talk about your fannish origin story. How did you come to fandom, why did you choose your fannish name, do you have more than one secret identity?

I started writing and reading fic with Harry Potter, then discovered Doctor Who which I didn't properly write for but it provided a bridge to Life on Mars fandom, where I have been content writing fic for nearly 8 years now. There has been the odd foray into Torchwood, Starsky and Hutch and Cabin Pressure, but I've always come back to LoM. Just in the past six months I've discovered Person of Interest and been completely captivated by it.

My name is...I find it a great comfort that... however far away I am from people I love, barring a sudden relocation to an alien planet, we will always be under the same sky. Sky became my fannish nickname slightly by accident, but after several years I feel like I fully own it. I love meeting up with my best fannish friends and hearing them call me Sky in person.

Day 2

In your own space, create a list of at least three fannish things you'd love to receive, something you've wanted but were afraid to ask for - a fannish wish-list of sorts.

1) A Person of Interest Reese/Finch fanvid to My List by The Killers. The lyrics, in my opinion, are pretty damn perfect. Starts out Reese PoV and then switches to Finch at 'Don't give the ghost up'.

2) Vidding advice/tutorials. Please please please. I have Adobe Premiere Pro CS3 but no clue how to use it. I haven't had much luck getting clips into there. It just keeps saying all the filetypes aren't compatible.

3) Person of Interest Harold/Nathan fanart (or even fic). Remember this scene in 1x12 Legacy where Finch goes back to Nathan's old loft with Will? It took me ages to realise that's a swimming pool, and Harold stands and gazes out at it for long enough that...my slasher's imagination started to wander. But I can't draw. So I would adore it if something could exist of Nathan and Harold sitting in that pool.

Day 1

In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you have created. It can be your favorite fanworks that you've created, or fanworks you feel no one ever saw, or fanworks you say would define you as a creator.

Dust Yourself For Fingerprints And Grin
Life on Mars (UK) | Sam/Gene/Annie | NC-17/Brown Cortina/Explicit | 3676 words
Because I reread this last night just on a whim and quite objectively thought...this is pretty good. The pacing is good, the characterization is good, try as I might I couldn't find a sentence that I would change if I wrote it again. I like how Annie is in control, how she divides her attention between them, their sense of teamwork. I love the shift of atmosphere from winter cold to cosy warmth.

Harold's boyfriends appreciating his genius
Person of Interest (CBS) | Harold/Nathan and Reese/Finch | Not rated (SFW)
I finally learnt how to gif in 2014 and this is my favourite thing that I posted. Finch has shot right to the top end of my all-time favourite characters list, and people praising him just makes me happy. His humble reactions to said praise reaffirm how flipping gorgeous he is.

Slow Dance
Life on Mars (UK) | Sam/Gene | G/White Cortina
Not from 2014, unlike the first two. Because I'm still not someone who can do fanart (however much I wish I could), but I'm forever proud of how this manip turned out.
