Summary: He thinks he needs this. These moments of peace in the dewy summer air.
It’s unusual, he thinks, for someone to be sitting on the roof of the police building at 5 in the morning. Then he thinks he needs to get a little perspective; it’s hardly usual for someone to be in the situation he’s in, out of time, out of mind, out of luck.
He’s lost count of the number of times he’s thought of just giving up, jumping off, leaving it all behind. But he doesn’t.
Because he’s not a coward.
He’s here because he’s here. And while the food’s a bit greasy and some of the people are greasier still, it’s not all bad. There’s plenty of work to be done, work which presents a new challenge itself. It’s not easy, but then work never is, whether in 1973, 2006 or the bloody Victorian times.
He thinks he needs this. These moments of peace in the dewy summer air. This time away from the noise and the smoke and the death. And the first streams of soft light tingle against his skin.
The sky paints him a picture of pink, yellow and purple. His lips quirk up at the edges.
Not a coward.
“And I tell myself, I am alive.”
