Doctor Who this evening! SO excited. *bounces*
Also, how epic was last night's Merlin?
There were some lovely Merlin/Arthur moments before we got to the mega angst fest that was the ending. I was quietly rejoicing during the bonfire scene because slash goggles on or not, they were totally bonding! XD
I didn't really get the rope thing because although it was funny to see Arthur go headfirst into the rotten fruit for a change I couldn't understand why he didn't just shimmy the rest of the way down. Even though Merlin didn't have any more rope left at his end, I was certain we could see that there was plenty left below where Arthur was hanging (i.e. he wasn't clinging to the very end of the rope). But maybe that's just me being pedantic.
And then there's the rope-snake thing. OMG, I was lol-ing. :P Too. Many. Innuendos.
I was also one of quite a few people it seems who signed on to the Morgana/Morgause femslash incest despite myself, lol. I am so corrupt and I haven't even gotten around to watching Supernatural yet. :P I thought they were both scorching in this ep. Morgana and her white dress! ♥
On a more serious note, do we actually know now whether Morgause was lying, partly lying or just twisting things? I was mighty confused about her motivations by the end. Arthur kept having the rug pulled out from under his feet this ep (and my gosh did Bradley act his little heart out. He was fantastic!), and I felt like the audience were a bit like that too.
Also, the actress who played his mother? Is she the same person who's been in the Waters of Mars trailers? I don't know why I thought that, they just seem similar for some reason, even if Ygraine looked quite a bit younger. IDK, I'm probably just being stupid again.
Anyway, the ending. I was a bit surprised when I came to look at the reaction posts in the comms because I didn't have quite as visceral reaction as some people apparently did. I felt that it was desperately sad for Merlin to have to sacrifice himself and his own people once again just to keep Uther (and therefore Camelot) safe and Arthur's conscience clear, but I didn't hate the characters or the writers for an apparent 'reset'. There is definitely more to this story and I should wager they are coming back to it in the finale. Maybe the scene with Merlin and Gaius laughing at the end is becoming cliched now, but heck, if we wanted a longer angsty fall-out thing we can do it in fanfic, right? They often just don't have time to go into as much depth as we would like and if ending on a somewhat bittersweet 'we'll-just-pretend-that-didn't-happen-so-as-to-be-able-to-continue-on-with-our-lives' note is all they have time for, I'll go with that. I for one would love to see a good long fic that deals with Arthur's state of mind following this ep.
I did think that Morgause seeing Uther and Arthur laughing and sitting next to each other in the hall was too much too fast, though. Only there would I agree that it was a bit of a reset.
And lastly, I'm really glad that Merlin didn't add to Arthur's turmoil by pulling yet another rug out. Seriously. They'd both been through enough in one day, I think Merlin was right to keep himself from throwing yet another curveball revelation at Arthur. I'm not condoning lying, but I do think Merlin's is a special case here and he's doing his damned best even if his morals aren't always completely squeaky clean.
Anyway, I thoroughly enjoyed this ep. Finally we're getting back up to the standard of Series 1 again. The only thing I would say is that there is still not enough Morgana and Gwen. Pretty much the only screen time Gwen's had this series has been when she's been fawning/being fawned over by Arthur/Lancelot and I like her much better when she's kicking ass in a swordfight or saving the day with Merlin. Morgana has been her usual awesome self if a little more vulnerable than last year, but I'd just like to see the character development from 2x04 continued and I wish she'd get a shot at saving the day for once.
...Okay, rant over. :P
I feel so lazy this weekend. I've done nothing but watch television. :P
